TMJ Checks

A TMJ check involves a physical exam and imaging tests to diagnose temporomandibular joint disorders. A healthcare professional, dentist, or ear, nose, and throat (ENT) doctor may perform the exam.

Physical Examination

Observing range of motion when opening and closing the mouth
Feeling the jaw joints for tenderness
Pressing around the head to locate areas of discomfort
Sliding the teeth from side to side
Listening for noises when opening and closing the mouth

Symptoms

Clicking, popping, or grating sounds coming from the jaw
Muscle pain that can be felt in the cheeks and temples
Jaw joint pain
Lock Jaw
Severe tension headaches
