TMJ Checks

A TMJ check involves a physical exam and imaging tests to diagnose temporomandibular joint disorders.  A healthcare professional, dentist, or ear, nose, and throat (ENT) doctor may perform the exam. 

Physical Examination

  • Observing range of motion when opening and closing the mouth
  • Feeling the jaw joints for tenderness
  • Pressing around the head to locate areas of discomfort
  • Sliding the teeth from side to side
  • Listening for noises when opening and closing the mouth

Symptoms

  • Clicking, popping, or grating sounds coming from the jaw
  • Muscle pain that can be felt in the cheeks and temples
  • Jaw joint pain
  • Lock Jaw
  • Severe tension headaches
