Mouthguards

Just like knee guards protect players’ knees, a mouthguard protects the gums, teeth, or even jaw bones from injury. We at Goldfields Family Dental recommend using mouthguards for different reasons, whether it’s for dental concerns, teeth grinding, or protection against heavy physical activities.

Usually, mouthguards are given to protect your upper set of teeth as they are more susceptible to injury, but if necessary, these dental appliances can be recommended for both sets.

Why Do You Need a Mouthguard?

Here are multiple reasons why your dentist may recommend a mouthguard for you-

  • When you frequently play heavy sports like football, hockey, boxing, basketball, etc., you’re putting your teeth and jaw at risk of injuries
  • Participating in risky physical activities like biking, gymnastics, skateboarding, etc.
What Are The Types of Mouthguards?

Depending on the usage, there are mainly three types of mouthguards-

Sports Mouthguards

During high-impact sports, your teeth and mouth fall at high risk from sports-related injuries. Wearing sports mouthguards during soccer, hockey, boxing, etc. can significantly minimize the scope of having knocked-out teeth, bone breakage, or chipped teeth.

When Should You Use a Custom-Made Mouthguard?

Custom-fitted mouthguards are intricately crafted as per your teeth’ shape and size for a comfortable fit. If you need a custom pair of mouthguards, here’s the easy procedure-

  • Our expert dentist will use a digital scanning device along with dental putty to take an exact impression of your teeth set.
  • A lab technician will then receive these impressions and make a custom mouthguard using strong acrylic
  • The whole process is pretty convenient and won’t take more than a few days
  • Depending on your need, the mouthguard will be thick or thin. For more stress on your teeth sets, a thicker mouthguard will be recommended.

Wearing custom-fitted mouthguards can benefit you in different ways including offering prolonged protection and keeping your teeth shapes intact. They are also more comfortable to wear and pretty effective during sports injuries or bruxism. However, you must listen to our instructions on maintaining your oral hygiene as you use mouthguards.

Why are Custom-made Mouthguards better than Over-the-counter Mouthguards?

Ready-made sports mouthguards might be cheaper and convenient to access but they do not perfectly fit your mouth and hence, can cause severe discomfort. They are also less effective against injuries and may even cause difficulty in speaking. You can’t also wear them over your braces.

On the other hand, custom-fitted ones offer you all the benefits of a durable, convenient, and highly effective dental safety appliance.

Can I Wear Mouthguards If I Have Braces or Dental Implants?

Custom-fitted mouthguards can certainly be used to protect your teeth crowns, bridges, braces, and all other dental implants fitting your teeth set like a glove!
