Free dental services will be available for Laverton students and adults thanks to funding provided to a Kalgoorlie-Boulder dental clinic.

Goldfields Family Dental will travel to Laverton on Wednesday next week for a three-week stint during which local students, adults and elderly people will receive free general dental care.

GFD owner Alex Naylor said Bundu Contracting approached the business with the idea after hearing it had a mobile dental van.

“We get a lot of patients from Laverton, Leonora, Leinster, and a lot of them are coming in with pain,” she said.

“You can tell these patients have not been serviced at all, or not for a very long time, and when I was speaking to one of the ladies out there, she said she had been there for over 10 years and they never had a dental service there.

“So I’m hoping if we can try and intervene and do the check-ups, cleans and start getting people on more of a six-monthly preventative routine, hopefully we will see less of these patients present in pain.”

With sponsorship from Bundu, Lynas Rare Earths, Anglo Gold Ashanti, Gold Road Resources, and Minara Resources — and support from the Laverton Cross Cultural Association — the dental team will be able to provide various services for free during their trip.

The team will spend two weeks at Laverton Primary School offering free services for students from various remote schools, before moving to the LCCA, where they will spend a few days focusing on elderly people in need, before opening up to all adults.

Mrs Naylor said she would love to find ways to provide similar support to other remote areas, and had a trip to Menzies planned for next year.
