Smiles were restored and spirits lifted over the weekend as dozens of Kalgoorlie residents received much needed dental care at no cost, thanks to the return of the annual TIMA Katitjin Ku Free Health and Dental Clinic held from September 27 to 28.

Now in its second year, the initiative provided free dental and medical services to locals who might otherwise go without. Hosted at the Salvation Army Church grounds, the clinic was powered by an impressive network of 86 volunteers including dentists, dental specialists, doctors, dental assistants, psychologists, and support volunteers from across Australia, the Philippines, South Africa, and Sri Lanka.

The event was made possible through the collaboration between the dedicated volunteer dental team of the True Chi International Medical Association (TIMA Fun Run), and the local Goldfields Family Dental, who worked together to bring the idea to life in Kalgoorlie.

With Goldfields Family Dental partnering with local sponsors to help fund the project, visiting dentists and nurses offered a full range of general dental services including emergency and preventative care. Patients also received health checks, physiotherapy, counselling, and social support through the volunteer network.

Goldfields Family Dental sponsored the weekend, and over the course of the two day clinic, over $71,000 worth of treatment was provided, through 170 appointments by 71 dental and medical care specialists, allied health, and temp medical nurses.

Dental treatments covered everything from basic check ups, fillings, and preventative procedures to emergency care. Files of grateful patients were supported by onsite care and follow up from local practitioners, including Goldfields Family Dental.

Nurse Navigator Rydian Meredith from the Kalgoorlie Hospital praised Goldfields Family Dental, saying the clinic helps many people in the community access dental care they often postpone or miss out on altogether.

Volunteers from the True Chi Foundation reflected on how the idea for the project evolved into a community driven success.

“When we first initiated this idea, the response was incredible. As word continued to spread this year, so too did the impact. I hope the initiative continues to expand and the opportunity will be available next year. I feel grateful to have had the opportunity to provide care for our patients, even after patients received dental care, they were given free physiotherapy, counselling, and medical check ups. This shows how much the True Chi Foundation and community organisations are willing to cooperate and help people,” they shared.

Clinicians attending the TIMA Chi clinic made the event possible by donating their specialty in dentistry, cardiology, general practice, psychology, and medical care. The clinic was made possible by TIMA Perth, and expanding in future years, they aim to gather even more volunteers and professionals to get involved.

This weekend wasn’t just about treatment, it was about connecting with the community, offering care, and reminding people they matter.
