Toothbrushing Instructions

Building proper toothbrushing habits should start in childhood, as it’s vital for their overall oral health. From the time their first tooth erupts to the time they independently take care of their oral hygiene, they need to learn effective brushing techniques as a foundation for a lifetime of the perfect smile.

Why Is Proper Toothbrushing Important for Children?

We at Goldfields Family Dental Clinic believe that regular brushing and flossing guide the way to the ideal adult teeth sets, removing the high chances of early tooth decay, plaque accumulation, and gum diseases. Primary teeth or baby teeth play the most crucial role in allowing children to speak, eat, and eventually guide the right alignment and buildup of permanent teeth. Hence, starting early oral care assures healthy and strong teeth and overall dental health.

When Should You Start Brushing Your Child’s Teeth?

Depending on the usage, there are mainly three types of mouthguards-

  • Don’t use any toothpaste, rather only water during 0-18 months of age
  • Use low-fluoride toothpaste in small amounts, about a pea size within 18 months to 6 years of age
  • For 6 years and older, you can allow them a pea size amount of normal fluoride toothpaste
  • Do keep an eye on them so they don’t end up swallowing the toothpaste.
  • Be mindful of using a small-headed toothbrush with soft bristles designed for children
  • You can also choose an electric but safe toothbrush designed for children to make brushing a fun activity for kids aged 3 or more
  • It is important to choose a toothpaste that has fluoride in it as it’s a vital ingredient against tooth decay.
  • To make it more fun, you may allow non-mint or other fruit-flavored toothpaste for brushing the teeth of your little munchkins
  • Don’t forget to start the flossing habit as soon as their teeth grow and begin touching
  • First of all, it’s very important to consider a suitable brushing position. You can start by sitting or standing behind your child and allowing their head to rest against your body securing their head position. This will allow you to peek at all parts of their mouth to make sure it’s properly cleansed.
  • As you start brushing, make smaller and softer circular motions to clean the chewing/biting, inner, and outer surfaces of their teeth
  • Be mindful of the gum area because that’s the typical area of plaque and tartar accumulation
  • Brush for about 2 minutes thoroughly to make sure it’s done properly
  • As you are done with the brushing, don’t make your kid rinse thoroughly with water rather ask him to just spit out the toothpaste. In this way, there will be a small amount of fluoride still present in their mouth to keep on protecting their oral health.
  • Gently cleanse their tongue for bad breath and bacteria removal
  • In case you use an electric toothbrush, gently guide the head of the brush to every single tooth before turning on the motion. Slowly move across the teeth sets and let the electric brush do its job!
How to Overcome Brushing Challenges?

It’s not an easy task to teach all children the brushing techniques or even get them accustomed to regular brushing. So here are a few tips that can work for you –

  • Make the brushing experience a fun one by getting toothbrushes with your children’s favorite characters, or doing a sin along during every brushing time
  • To make them independent in toothbrushing, you can brush along with your kids to show them how it’s properly done
  • You may try brushing in other places like the kitchen if your child does not like brushing in the bathroom
  • Often kids don’t like using toothpaste, in this case, you can start with only water or fruit-flavored toothpaste
  • You can also keep them motivated for regular brushing by introducing a reward system
